Description

Counselor Brad Hambrick outlines a 9-step process for finding hope and relief amid the struggles associated with depression and anxiety.

The persistent presence of depression or anxiety can make us want to give up. We begin to wonder, “What’s the use?” The slow fade of hope and heavy weight of dark emotions make our suffering more intense. In a broken world, it’s impossible to completely eradicate depression and anxiety, but we can have hope and find meaning amid our struggle. This hope becomes more tangible with a concrete plan and support from friends.

Depression and Anxiety is a step-by-step, biblically rooted plan that can be used as a personal study, with a counselor, or in a group. Participants will learn to bring their hardships to God, steward their body well, and pursuing a meaningful life even when they feel depressed or anxious. Hambrick emphasizes the importance of understanding the interplay between suffering and sin and provides practical tools to address emotional struggles while encouraging spiritual growth.

  • 9-step model helps participants understand the struggles that accompany depression and anxiety and gives actionable strategies for overcoming with the hope of the gospel.
  • In-depth resource for churches and individuals to use for support groups to address depression and anxiety in a faith-filled and healing way.
  • A resource in the Church-Based Counseling series, built on the G4 model of subject-specific, lay-led counseling groups, designed to help churches create sustainable lay counseling ministries.
Brad Hambrick, ThM, EdD, serves as the Pastor of Counseling at The Summit Church in Durham, NC. He also serves as Assistant Professor of Biblical Counseling at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, a council member of the Biblical Counseling Coalition, and has authored several books, including Making Sense of Forgiveness, Angry with God, and The Church-Based Counseling series, and served as general editor for the Becoming a Church that Cares Well for the Abused curriculum.

Endorsements

“This book will be a guide that breathes a bit of life into you and gives you a small step, right now, that will make a noticeable difference. The hardest part will be saying yes to a group of like-minded brothers and sisters who know something of your struggle. Leave this book on your kitchen table with your Bible, for easy access.”
Edward T. Welch, CCEF Faculty; author of Depression: Looking Up from the Stubborn Darkness

Depression and Anxiety: 9 Steps Toward Hope and Peace is theologically rich with practical application of God’s truths to combat the everyday struggles of people who suffer from depression-anxiety. It’s refreshing how the material easily lends itself to in-depth discussions and biblical solutions to Satan’s attacks. Theologically sound with practical application is a winner every time. Lives are being changed with this material.”
Grayson L. Osteen, Lay Leader; MA in Biblical Counseling, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

“I have used this material with women for years, before it became the book it is today, and they have felt heard and seen, cared for and guided toward God in ways that have helped them navigate deep emotional experiences with hope. Brad is gifted at looking at a particular struggle from all sides in a way that is thoughtful to the experience of the struggler (both sinner and sufferer) and thoughtful of the wisdom of God.”

Betty-Anne Van Rees, Biblical counselor; council board member, Biblical Counseling Coalition; board member, Canadian Biblical Counseling Coalition

Resources I Wish I had, and WHOLEheartedly recommend!

Posted by Marla Stanley on 08 02 2026

10 years ago, I was battling depression, anxiety, and what I didn’t realize at the time was ongoing traumatization. I remember trying everything I knew to do, desperate for something to work. I attended a local (Christian/church-based) support group, had conversations with mentors, our pastor, and friends who simply didn’t have the resources to help me. They tried the best they could. They responded in the ways they knew how, but it wasn’t what I needed when I was struggling and crushed by the weight of it all. Coming out in just a few days are two resources that I know would have drastically improved my life if they had existed back then! Depression and Anxiety: 9 Steps Towards Hope and Peace Growing After Trauma: 9 Steps Towards Renewed Peace I cannot express how thrilled I am that Brad Hambrick has been faithful to his work and dedicated to creating these materials for use now. Let me tell you what makes these two books unique, and how I would recommend using them. First, Brad’s unique approach to recovery materials differentiates a model for breaking cycles of sin from a model for healing from suffering. Distinct steps for these two unique problems are essential to setting people up for success and actually helping them find healing that moves into new life and identity in Christ and stewarding life to the glory of God. This helps mitigate the confusion that many in recovery ministries experience when those who are suffering are victims of trauma, abuse, or the harmful effects of others’ sin. Separating sin-based groups and suffering-based groups drastically improves the growth outcomes and healthy results of spiritual fruit. Second, the G4 material is accessible to anyone desiring to lead, host, or facilitate a group on these topics. Whether a seasoned pastor, biblical counselor, or simply a fellow struggler who wants a guide-in-a-box, these are a great place to start and invite others into a topic-based group that can facilitate progress in healing and recovery. Isn’t that what we actually want for ourselves, our community, and our churches? Other distinctions about both of these guides: An open-group model, meaning individuals can join and be at different places or “steps” in the journey. A trauma-informed perspective that is grounded in gospel truth. Tangible help from the very first step, respecting the individual’s autonomy and need to go at their own pace. No spiritual bypassing! Skip the platitudes and surface-level Christian niceties for a depth of healing. Video teaching to introduce each discussion. Insight for the whole person: spiritual, emotional, and physical support included. Assessments to help evaluate oneself An intentional and structured process, bridging directly into small group discipleship ministries (whether Sunday School, small group ministry, missional communities, etc) Helpful appendix of resources catering to the unique needs of the struggling individual. As I read through and reviewed these resources, I couldn’t help but think that this is pretty much how I would design and curate materials for a supportive study on these topics: combining the truths of Scripture and hope of the gospel with tangible practical help, and assessments that help ground individuals in reality. I can strongly recommend both of these resources, and would wholeheartedly recommend them for use in communities and churches. Pair either of these resources with Facilitating Counseling Groups: A Leader’s Guide for Group-Based Counseling Ministry for further leadership equipping.
