This book is beautiful - illustrations that capture imagination and attention. And the content is true, and good. Well-intentioned. But it feels over eager, and missed its audience. Like using a tone for children but not changing all of your explanation from the way you would talk to an adult. I just think it misses its mark. It is very wordy to read to a preschooler. And the tone is somehow off. (Stiff? I’m not sure how to describe it. Very instructional, like a bygone era of children expected to sit very still and maybe not speak until spoken to…?) I have a feeling we will read this one in many many pieces and will not make it all the way through in one sitting until they are in grade school. Maybe I’m wrong. I’ve not yet had a preschooler to read to. But it just feels like a bit much.

Our Great God also has helps in the back of the book to assist with Scripture memorization and is a great addition to the Bible Verses to Remember series. Each of the books in the Bible Verses to Remember series, I feel, has a theme to it and for Our Great God, I believe, it is Praise and Worship. Our Great God shows the reader using Psalm 95:3 what we have to Praise and Worship God for and why. The illustrations by Sengsavane Chounramany lend itself to the feel of the subject matter. Sally Michael’s prose and words make the book almost lyrical. Our Great God is a way to help introduce young ones to why our God is Magnificent and worthy of all of our Praise.
