Description

Gospel Training for Deacons helps to prepare and equip deacons to serve the church well.

Every church needs people to take the lead in serving the practical needs of the congregation. In Gospel Training for Deacons, Robert H. Thune is intentional about training deacons by grounding them in the gospel of grace, giving them the tools for spiritual formation, and biblical direction for their role.

Taking a biblical and practical approach to training deacons, this resource will shape future leaders at the heart level for their calling to serve the church. Thune helps churches develop deacons who know their own heart and how the good news of the gospel applies to it and cultivate a sense of "gospel fluency" so that they can live the gospel out in community. Whether used in one-on-one discipleship or in a small group setting, this study will give deacons the biblical foundation for their service in the church of Jesus Christ to faithfully serve.

  • Spiritual formation combined with biblical teaching about what it means to be a deacon.
  • Discussion questions, space for journaling, and practical application exercises help to move information from head to heart.
  • An invaluable aid to pastors in leadership development.

Robert H. Thune, MA, is founding and lead pastor of Coram Deo Church in Omaha, Nebraska. He is the author of Gospel Eldership, Gospel Training for Deacons, the coauthor of The Gospel-Centered Life and The Gospel-Centered Community, and the creator of the Daily Liturgy Podcast. In addition to his work as a pastor and writer, he helps to lead a classical Christian school, coaches and trains church leaders, and serves on the Council of The Gospel Coalition.

Endorsements

“Where you find a healthy church, I bet you'll find flourishing deacons. Bob Thune's book will help you train and deploy these vital servants in your church. I'm always grateful for how Bob combines practical advice with thoughtful reflections on the work of the gospel in our hearts.”
Collin Hansen, Editor in Chief and Vice President for Content, The Gospel Coalition; author of Timothy Keller: His Intellectual and Spiritual Formation

“A companion to his outstanding book, Gospel Eldership, Bob Thune’s Gospel Training for Deacons is the best resource I know of for identifying and preparing deacons for their service in the local church. It begins with the assumption that Jesus is the quintessential servant leader and is the meaning, model, and means for all leadership in the body of Christ. Because of the crisis of leadership in our culture everywhere, I envision using this book to help disciple servant leaders for callings even beyond the local church.”
Scotty Smith, Pastor Emeritus, Christ Community Church, Franklin, TN; teacher in residence, West End Community Church, Nashville, TN

“Bob Thune has been a pastor and church leader for many years—he knows that deacons are a vital part of a healthy, sound church. Whether you are a church leader, someone interested in becoming a deacon, or simply a church member wanting to better understand what a deacon does, this book is a tremendous resource.”
Courtney Doctor, Director of Women’s Initiatives, The Gospel Coalition; Bible teacher; author of From Garden to Glory and In View of God’s Mercies

“The office of deacon is one of the most significant and yet overlooked roles in the church. In this book, Bob Thune not only casts a biblical vision for the office of deacon, but he also guides readers through a process that cultivates the character befitting the office. Our church has used Gospel Eldership for years and I can’t wait to use Gospel Training for Deacons.”
Jeremy Treat, Pastor for Preaching and Vision, Reality LA, Los Angeles, CA; adjunct professor of theology, Biola University; author of Seek First
