Description

Who Is God? invites families to get to know God better through fifty-two devotions and pictures that display his attributes, characteristics, and names.

When you meet a new friend, how do you get to know them? You might ask their name, then what they’re interested in. What are their likes and dislikes? The more time you spend with them, the more you get to know them. It’s similar with God. As we spend time with God in his Word, we get to know him better. We learn his names, his attributes, and the different ways he reveals himself through stories, symbols, and imagery in Scripture.

In Who Is God? devotions written by Kate Hox are paired with illustrations by Joe Hox to present families with a big view of God, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Each devotion includes a captivating illustration, a key verse to remember, Bible passages for reference, reflection questions, and song suggestions.

  • With fifty-two chapters, families can use Who Is God? as their weekly devotional for an entire year.
  • Stories from the Old and New Testaments show readers how all Scripture is connected and what it reveals about God from beginning to end.
  • Follows the same format and style as Kate and Joe Hox’s popular family devotional Who Is Jesus?
  • Free printable cards that correspond with the pictures and song links can be found at katehox.com.

Kate Hox is a mom of four and wife to illustrator Joe Hox. She holds a degree in elementary education from Dordt University and now works as a writer for Dwell Kids. Kate is the author of Who Is Jesus? 40 Pictures to Share with Your Family, and Who Is God? 52 Pictures to Share with Your Family. She loves helping kids understand the Bible.

Joe Hox was raised on a farm in southern Iowa where he doodled whenever he wasn't spading thistles or bottle-feeding calves. Everyone knew by his crooked hay rows that he would choose art over farming. Joe taught art for twelve years before becoming a full-time illustrator. He is the illustrator for the Good News for Little Hearts series, Who Is Jesus? 40 Pictures to Share with Your Family, and Who Is God? 52 Pictures to Share with Your Family written by his wife, Kate.

Tyler Van Halteren, Founder and Creative Director, Lithos Kids

“In a culture where many are recreating God in their own image, Kate Hox provides a timely resource to help our kids learn what God says about himself through Scripture. Research from organizations like Barna reveal a troubling trend in how few born-again Christians, pastors, and children’s/youth pastors hold to a fully biblical worldview. Parents, church is important, but we cannot reliably outsource biblical teaching. The responsibility is on the shoulders of parents to impart a biblical worldview, and Kate Hox’s Who Is God? is an excellent place to begin.”
Hillary Morgan Ferrer, Founder, President, and Author, Mama Bear Apologetics

“Team Hox has done it again! Accompanied by Joe’s stunning illustrations, Kate faithfully traces the story of Scripture to reveal glimpses of our good God on every page. This beautiful book will help both parents and children to see God better and love him more. We will treasure this book.”

    Amazing Family Devotional

    Posted by Kate @remedystorytime on 02 23 2026

This gorgeous new release helps introduce children to the character of God through his word. Each devotional is about two pages long and includes Bible passages, a key verse and reflection questions. The reflection questions are wonderful and include more Bible verse references to look up. Another feature of this book that I love is the song suggestions in the back of the book that correspond to each devotional. This book will help your whole family to know God better by spending time in his word and understanding his character, attributes and names in new ways. Kate Hox is very gifted at explaining theological concepts in accessible and age appropriate ways. The woodcut style illustrations are beautiful and unique and help bring these devotions to life! I cannot wait to share this book with my girls. They loved “Who is Jesus?” so much that they asked me to start it over when we finished it, I know they are going to love this one just as much. These devotionals are a great length for including in homeschooling, family worship or at the dinner table. “We too have been rescued, and we too have been given the law of God. God loves us very much, and he knows that following his law will bring us joy - it’s for our good! We can thank God for our salvation by obeying his law.” (p 42) “His saving blood moors us to God himself. We are totally secure. This knowledge is what gave the disciples hope in the face of persecution. It was their anchor! They know they were safe with God - totally secure. Whatever bad things happened to them, whatever sickness or disease came, whatever words or fists attacked them - it didn’t matter. They were anchored in the Lord through the blood of Jesus.” (p 202) You’ll definitely want to add this one to your shelves!

    Biblical Rich and Kid Friendly

Posted by Emily Paul on 02 17 2026

Finding a solid devotional for kids can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack of "fluff." When I first picked up Who Is God? by Kate Hox, I got exactly what I wanted! Here is why this book has earned a permanent spot on our nightstand. Why It Resonates With Us 1. It Doesn’t "Talk Down" to Her Many children's books oversimplify God to the point of losing His majesty. What I love about Kate Hox’s approach is that she introduces big, "meaty" theological concepts—like God’s immutability—in a way that a child can actually grasp. It treats my daughter like a deep thinker, which she is. 2. The Focus is on God’s Character, Not Just Our Behavior So much of children's religious literature is "be good because God said so." This book flips the script. It focuses entirely on who God is. I want my daughter’s good behaviour to come from a place of trust and awe rather than just following rules, and this is such a great book to help with this! 3. The Beauty of the Layout Let’s be real: aesthetics matter. The illustrations are thoughtful and calming, not loud or distracting. It creates a peaceful atmosphere for our morning or bedtime reading. It feels like a "special" book, and she treats it that way. How it Works for a Busy Parent I really appreciate the structure Hox uses. Each section is bite-sized but impactful: * A Scripture passage: Grounding everything in the actual Word. * A clear explanation: Connecting a complex attribute of God to everyday life. * Discussion questions: These are the gold mine. They aren't "yes or no" questions; they actually get my daughter talking about her fears, her hopes, and how she sees the world. Final Verdict: If you want a resource that builds a sturdy foundation of faith while sparking genuine curiosity, this is it. It’s not just a book she reads; it’s a book she’s growing up with.

Grounded in the gospel, guiding us to worship.

    Posted by Mallory on 02 17 2026

If you ask someone “Who is God?” oftentimes their response will start with “I think God…” or “I feel like God…”. Unfortunately this can happen even within the Church. Thankfully, God doesn’t leave it up to us to speculate or make guesses about who He is. He reveals Himself in the entirety of Scripture. We just need to read it. For children, we have wonderful books like the newest one from Kate Hox appropriately titled “Who Is God?” to help us teach them about the character and attributes of God. This new book is a treasure trove of 52 stories that help you and your child(ren) to trace the storyline of the Bible, see Jesus in the OT, recognize themes throughout the Bible, and know and understand God’s names and attributes. Each story is a 2 page spread with a a third page of reflection questions, Bible references, and the key verse listed at the end. I love that the Bible references are included and appreciate the reflection questions (with answers in the back) to help assist with really digging into the story and making sure your child(ren) comprehend what you’ve read. The illustrations that accompany each story are bold and captivating, pairing beautifully with each story. If that’s not enough to sell you on this book, there are also song suggestions for each story to bring an additional element to this study as well as printable cards from the website. This book would be excellent for family worship, bedtime stories, homeschool morning time, or weekly devotions.

From Toddler to Parent, God's Character Revealed

Posted by Amber Palmer on 02 17 2026

Family devotions and family worship are a really sweet part of teaching our kids about who God is, their sinfulness and need for a Savior, and the marvelous work Jesus did on the cross. This devotional book is a gem because it opens up so many opportunities for describing to them the depths of God's character and His love for us. It helps illustrate how we see can God revealed in every aspect of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation. I love how this book is appropriate for all ages, from toddler to parents. Everyone will learn and rejoice in our great God and how He has revealed Himself to us! It's a theologically rich book that crafts each devotional into a concept that even my young kids can understand. Even my husband and I, who have both grown up learning about God (thanks, mom & dad!) deepen our understanding of who God is. Kate uses different stories from both the Old and New Testaments to paint a picture of one of God's many beautiful facets. To create a devotional with such meaningful depth at a level our kids can understand is really a gift. And for the parents who look for kids devotionals that don't use pictures of Jesus, both this one and Who Is Jesus is so perfect. Definitely a devotional to add to your family collection!

    beautiful illustrations, rich biblical content

    Posted by Shannon N on 02 16 2026

Our family has enjoyed reading through Kate and Joe's earlier book, Who is Jesus?, each year during Lent. When I found out they were releasing a new resource, I just knew I had to check it out. I'm not disappointed! Each entry looks more closely at an attribute or work of the Triune God (God is Potter, God of Hope, God is Self-Existent, Unchanging Reality), weaves threads from the Old and New Testaments, offers some reflection questions, and references verses we could look at more closely (as time allows). Our favorite thing about this book, though, is the illustrations! They are done in a woodcut style and pair beautifully with the theologically rich content of the book. When I sit down with my daughters (ages 12 and 8), we often start by noticing the details of the picture first. This sometimes sparks great conversation and makes a good starting point for the devotional time. This (and their earlier book) will no doubt be a treasured resource for our family for years to come!

Pleasing to the Eye and good for spiritually rich Truth

    Posted by Elaine V on 02 04 2026

I read this book cover to cover as soon as I could! I’m a mom of middle school and young elementary kids and find the material in this book to be compelling for all ages (myself included). The Bible comes alive in the illustrations that get richer as you look at each one – the symbolic detail corresponds to the text of each lesson. The lessons themselves are rooted in Scripture and well-handled for context and cross-referencing to make connections between the Old and New Testaments. The whole book is really well done, including the discussion questions that will draw out more conversation for your particular crew (plus worship song suggestions in the back!). I appreciate the author’s commitment to family discipleship and the high view of God’s word. Having a book like this that is steadfastly in line with the meaning of the text will help kids as they grow in their own reading of the Bible also. Aside from seeing how it could increase my children's understanding of “Who is God?,” I personally was drawn to worship, considering His love, mercy, wisdom, power & kingship … and so much more.
