God Made Me Unique, a beautifully illustrated picture book, helps parents and caregivers teach children that God creates every person in the image of God and each individual has tremendous value, regardless of his or her appearance or abilities.

The story is set in a Sunday school classroom where a new girl, Brie, is introduced by her mom. Brie’s Sunday school teacher takes the time to welcome Brie and to explain to the other children why she is wearing headphones. Through getting to know Brie, the children are guided into a biblical understanding of the uniqueness of each of God’s children. Along the way they learn to ask questions and gain an understanding about their new friend.

Told in a charming rhyming style, this colorful, hardcover book will help eliminate fear and misconceptions about those who have special needs and emphasizes that every person deserves to be treated with kindness and respect.

The back of the book contains a special section just for parents and caregivers that will guide them in how to have biblical, loving conversations with children and gives them additional information and resources to equip them in talking about this important subject.

Like God Made All of Me by Justin and Lindsey Holcomb and God Made Me AND You by Shai Linne, God Made Me Unique gives parents the tools to have important, impactful conversations with their children that will grow their understanding of God, themselves, and others.

“As a father of a child with a disability, I love the message of this book—both for kids with disabilities and their peers who welcome and embrace them. Of all the places where this message needs to be heard and taken to heart, there is none more important than the church itself.”
Rev. Steve Bundy, Sr. Vice President, Joni and Friends International Disability Center

“Today’s children are keenly aware of social diversity, yet they often miss the God-connection. In the colorful book God Made Me Unique by Joni and Friends, readers meet a delightful cast of characters and discover God’s loving design for all people, including those with disabilities and special needs. Parents and teachers will appreciate the skillful use of God’s Word woven into the story and teaching aids. I highly recommend God Made Me Unique for every home, church, and school library.”

These teachings are significant for how we interact with people of all different types of abilities. This book highlights our value as God’s creatures and celebrates the different gifts God has given to each member of his family.”

“In writing God Made Me Unique, Joni and Friends have created a helpful tool for parents to use to equip their children to welcome kids with disabilities. I would encourage all parents to add this book to their family library. With growing numbers of children living with special needs, it is essential that we teach our children to value every person as uniquely created by God to bring him glory.”

Excellent For Teaching About Disabilities And God Made Us All Unique

Published by Rebecca Van Daniker on 12 14 2019

God Made Me Unique by Joni and Friends is an excellent book to explain to children how God values every person. The Sunday school teacher is preparing the students for a new student who needs headphones because she is sensitive to loud noises. So she uses this as an opportunity to teach about kids with special needs. Children will learn that we are all created by God and have value. The main important lesson that children will learn is how we are all part of the body of Christ and can be used in different ways. We all have different gifts. For example, some people would pray for others rather than sing, some may make the coffee, pastors who preach, mothers who rock the babies in the nursery, etc. Everyone is unique in their own way, including kids with disabilities.  At the back of the book, you can find talking points to discuss the topic further. Discussions include what the Bible says about disabilities. what Jesus says about disabilities, and how to be a good friend to someone with special needs. Highly recommended as this is very gospel-centered! Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review, which I have given. I was not required to write a positive review and have not been compensated for it in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

    Excellent Children's Book!

Published by Matthew Cover on 12 10 2019

God Made Me Unique is a children’s book published by New Growth Press and written by Chonda Ralston. The illustrations are by Trish Mahoney. The subtitle of this book gives an excellent summary of the contents: Helping Children See Value in Every Person. This book is an excellent way to teach children how to value others that are different from them. This book uses stories to teach children (and adults for that matter!) that all people are created unique, and that means that we are not at all the same. This book covers different abilities that people have been given by the Lord, as well as different disabilities that people have been given by the Lord. The author utilizes God’s Word to teach very important truths, such as 1 Corinthians 12:20-21 (which teaches that there is one body with many parts that all need each other) and Psalm 139:13 (teaching us that God is the Creator who made us all with great care, including our abilities and disabilities). I really appreciate the Foreword that is given by Joni Earekson Tada who most certainly understands this topic well. She has thankfully begun a wonderful ministry that aims to help the church better understand how to love and serve families that have been affected by disability. I am likewise thankful for the “Four Ways to Help Your Child Understand Uniqueness and Disability as Part of God’s Plan” at the back of the book. This section is a must-read for parents, guardians, or any other loved one who is reading this book to a child. It’s such a helpful tool! I highly recommend this book to every parent and church as a way of teaching our little ones how to honor the Lord and those made in His image! Great Resource!

    Published by Veronica on 12 01 2019

This was a sweet story about a new girl coming to Sunday School who has special needs. The teacher is explaining to the class in a fun rhyming style how God makes each one of us different and unique. Each person also has a different part to play for the church body, with different talents and abilities. She talks about different types of disabilities, seen and unseen and reminds the children to treat each other kindly and that they're just like us. There's a section at the back for parents to go deeper in teaching their child about what the Bible says about disabilities, how Jesus responded to those with disabilities and how to be a friend to someone with a disability. There were fun, colorful illustrations in a nice hardcover. This is a wonderful resource for parents, teachers or caregivers to show children how to treat others and understand them better. I received this book from New Growth Press. I was not compensated for this review. All opinions are my own.

    Helping children value others

Published by Jill Potts Jones on 11 26 2019

Written by Chondra Ralston and illustrated by Trish Mahoney, "God Made Me Unique" teaches children about the value of every person and how to treat people with special needs. The book uses a children's Sunday school class to teach children how to relate to those who are different from themselves and to show that everyone has a uniqueness about them.  As the children share about times they have felt left out, they begin to understand how people with special needs feel who are often made fun of and/or left out. God made me unique

    Published by ReneeK on 11 26 2019

As a mom with a child with disabilities I’m always so grateful to find books that talk about kids with disabilities. This is one of the best ones I’ve seen. The setting is in the Sunday school classroom at church when a child who has disabilities is introduced. Wyatt looks pretty normal on the outside and he is spinning a fidget spinner. The kids start talking about kids with different disabilities from being in a wheelchair. It goes on to say that, “God made me unique; it is part of His plan.” Just because we are different doesn’t mean they should be excluded from activities like playing ball. I love that the story talks about that some disabilities you can see and others are unseen. You see kids in a wheelchair, braces to walk, using ASL, and even sensory issues. The class has a mixture of disabilities. In the back of the book there is a guide:4 Ways to Help Your Child Understand Uniqueness and Disability as Part of God’s Plan. It gives you some ways to talk to your kids and some other resources you can look into. I received a free copy of this product
