Helpful Study Guide
This type of study is carried out using the Three Trees Diagram that will be familiar to anyone with a biblical counseling background. I was first introduced to this diagram in How People Change.
Real Change is divided into six sessions that are drawn from this diagram based off of Jeremiah 17:5-8. These sessions are:
These sessions are meant to be applied to particular life situations to understand a biblical framework for handling trials and struggles in relation to our standing in Christ and for growing in sanctification. Each session is meant to cover a week and has a particular aim or goal it is trying to meet. This aim is worked out through reading Scripture, reading some summary thoughts by the authors, answering specific questions that are to be drawn out of the Scriptures, and homework that is meant to apply what was covered in the session. All of this is to be discussed during a weekly meeting.
This is meant to be a one-on-one study session, but leaders need not fear if they feel unequipped to lead. The last 40 pages of Real Change are devoted to a Leader's Guide that will help any Christian as they work through this book with someone else. Real Change is an excellent book because it relies on Scripture throughout. This isn't a self-help book, but rather a tool to be used to grow closer to God through "his direct working and by the encouragement and prayers of other people."
I am confident that any Christian that decides to work through this book with a friend will be greatly edified and encouraged.
I received a copy of this book from New Growth Press in exchange for an honest review.
