Marty Machowski's Promises Made Promises Kept shows families how the birth and life of Jesus fulfilled God's Old Testament promises of a Savior.
Start a new family tradition for the Christmas season by reading this "upside-down" book that includes fourteen Bible stories. Begin the week before Christmas with the first side, Promises Made which has seven stories that explore the Old Testament prophecies of the coming Messiah. On Christmas Day, flip the book over and continue by reading Promises Kept with seven more stories that vividly illustrate how Jesus's life, death, and resurrection and the beginning of the church fulfill God's promises.
Machowski weaves the promises and fulfillments together into one harmonized story that will deepen the family's faith in God's power and control over all of history and their lives too. Each story also includes questions for the family to discuss together.
“The Christmas season is the perfect time to spend some special hours as a family studying God's Word together. And this devotional is just the right resource to guide you.”
Tim Challies, Author of Seasons of Sorrow
“Marty Machowski has gifted families with a bite-sized Christmas devotional that beautifully connects the wonder of Jesus’s birth to all the glorious promises that he fulfills. It is a wonderful way to reflect on redemptive realities connecting Christ's birth to God’s fulfilled promises.”
Darby Strickland, CCEF faculty; author Something Scary Happened
“Promises Made Promises Kept is beautifully illustrated, theologically rich, and saturated with Scripture. Marty masterfully and creatively walks us through the promises God made to his people throughout the Old Testament and then shows how Jesus is the fulfillment of each promise. I’ve always wanted to go back in time to join Jesus and his disciples on the road to Emmaus, and while nothing could fully embody that experience, Promises Made Promises Kept gives us a glimpse.”
Curtis W. Solomon, Executive Director of The Biblical Counseling Coalition; author
“Marty Machowski does it again! This approachable family devotional guides children and adults through Scripture to rejoice in the fulfillment of God's promises. During the Christmas and New Year's rush, Promises Made Promises Kept will help keep your family gospel focused.”
Korrie Johnson, Founder of Good Book Mom, Christian children's book reviewer
“Don't we love the retelling of great stories? God's faithful promise-keeping in sending us his Son is the greatest story of all, and Machowski and Schorr team up to retell it faithfully. Your family will benefit from this colorful two-week scan of the entire sweep of history, complete with engaging graphics.”
Sam Crabtree, Pastor for Care, The North Church; board of directors, Desiring God
“Reading this book with your children is sure to become a beloved Christmas tradition in your home. Marty Machowski has the ability to take deep theological subjects and make them understandable to kids—and adults. The brilliant flip-book feature puts a fresh spin on the greatest story ever told.”
Arlene Pellicane, Author of Parents Rising; podcast host, The Happy Home

Promise Made and Promises Kept are two different devotional books. They are designed to be used in the week leading up to Christmas and the week following Christmas. Each devotional includes recommended Scripture references, a devotional by Marty Machowski, an illustration and some discussion questions. The devotions are a little long for young children but would be appropriate for families with elementary or middle school-aged children. The questions will help “test” the children’s comprehension. The illustrations are cartoon-like with sharp angles. Phil Schorr chose bright colors for the pictures which will appeal to children. Parents and caregivers looking for a Christmas devotional will want to take a look at these two books of Family Devotionals for Christmas.

I had the privilege of getting to read two advance Christmas books from New Growth Press, this being one of them. My family really enjoys books by Machowski and this was no exception. This is an “upside down” type of flipped book containing a total of 14 Christmas themed devotions. I have a 7, 5, and 2.5 year old. We read several of these stories to get a feel for the book and look forward to reading more as we approach December. Ideally, you start reading the week before Christmas with the stories in “Promises Made”. This collection of stories are Old Testament prophecies. When it’s Christmas Day, you flip the book to “Promises Kept” which is a collection of seven more stories that highlight Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection. This is a truly wonderful and beautifully illustrated book that contains theologically sound devotions with questions and answers that accompany each story, making it a great addition to family Bible time. Thank you to New Growth Press for my copy.
