Description

From the authors: "You don't need a Bible degree, an acoustic guitar, or a stocked craft closet to help your kids grow in their faith. With Faith Builder Catechism, you just need the book, a Bible, and around ten minutes. The devotional includes ice-breaker style 'Power-up' questions and 'Think about It' questions to help your family reflect on each devotional or passage."

Faith Builder Catechism is a 52-week devotional that helps families press pause on screen time and develop healthy discipleship rhythms in a fun, interactive format.

The most enthralling video games take place in elaborate kingdoms with characters we root for and stories we connect with. When playing a video game, we learn to inhabit the game's world. The same is true with our faith. Whether you're taking your first steps in family discipleship or are a pro who has weekly devotional routine in place, the interactive questions, answers, and devotionals in Faith Builder Catechism, will help your family establish building blocks of faith, one level at a time.

Authors Kevin Hippolyte, Jared Kennedy, and Trey Kullman lead the way for families to establish regular discipleship conversations and cultivate a deeper knowledge of the theology expressed in the Apostle's Creed, the Ten Commandments, the doctrines of grace, the Great Commission, and the Lord's Prayer.

  • Includes fun stickers so kids can "level up" and track their progress at each stage.
  • Written by three dads, raising kids in a digital world, experienced in children's and family ministry.
  • Helps families build a biblical worldview step by step by focusing on God's glory, God's kingdom, the gospel, God's church, and God's mission.
Kevin Hippolyte serves as director of student ministry at Sojourn Church Midtown and is cohost of Gospel-Centered Family's Press Pause podcast. He's also on the board at Hope Collaborative, a trauma-sensitive community development organization serving students, internationals, and neighbors. He lives with his wife, Kelly, and son in Louisville, Kentucky.
Trey Kullman served for more than five years as a family pastor and is now managing editor of Gospel-Centered Family. He and his wife, Annie, and their three children also live in Louisville, Kentucky where they attend Sojourn Church J-town.

    Faith Builder Catechism

Posted by CJ Gossage on 11 04 2024

Faith Builder Catechism has been incredible. I have walked my children through Q/A #8, and they love the book. The questions and answers make for an interactive lesson. They also love the stickers! What a great way to "gamify" catechesis! My only complaint, however, is that the answers could be simpler and more memorable!

    Excellent... with one minor gripe

    Posted by Steve on 01 17 2024

I owe a lot to some of my early, formative church experiences (after coming to faith as a teenager) including regular use of things like the Apostles' Creed and the Heidelberg Catechism. Regular exposure to these clear expressions of biblical truth built for me a solid foundation for my faith. The need for this type of foundational instruction has never been greater in the West as it settles deeply into a post-Christian era. I applaud the authors for bundling a great catechism tool into a volume that is relevant, youth-friendly (yet with content even adults can benefit from), and even attractive. I really wish I'd had something like this when my kids were younger. For all of these reasons, I think this is a 5-star resource and highly recommend it. My one minor gripe is that the authors chose to theme the book around video games (all of the lessons have a "Power-Up Question" to prompt discussion, and every question is tied to video gaming). Admittedly the gaming industry is huge, but a good portion of the world, including many youth, are NOT into gaming. I would have preferred that they went with a mix of themes for the power-up questions. But again, this is a minor gripe. It is easy enough to make up your own questions or modify the provided questions to make them more applicable for your needs. The core of the content is unaffected.

This book is a beautiful mix of engaging text and stunning visuals. The authors certainly had their audience in mind as the video game thread is easy to follow and enjoyable.

    Perfect for Home or Classroom

    Posted by Jane M on 10 26 2023

As someone who attended Catechism classes when I was young, I love this idea of a Catechism for family devotions. Catechism classes, at least in the churches I’ve attended in my adult life, no longer exist for children. Yet, they still need to learn the basics of the Christian faith. Hippolyte, Kennedy, and Kullman start the book with an introduction which can help guide parents in the use of the book. Since so many of the younger generation are familiar with the levels of video games, the authors use the concept of levels as they work through the topics of the catechism: God’s Glory, God’s Kingdom, The Gospel, God’s Grace, and God’s Church and Mission. Each level has multiple lessons or devotionals. Each devotional opens with a Q & A. Followed by a memory verse, a question, and a scripture passage to read. The devotionals close with some thoughts from the authors and something to think about. For those raised on the Heidelberg Catechism or the Westminster Shorter Catechism there will be similarities. I am not familiar with Luther’s Small Catechism or the Catechism for Young Children but those works influenced the writing of this book as well. The devotional has many uses - family devotions, a “catechism class” at church, or classroom devotions. If you want to help your children learn the doctrines of the Christian faith, I highly recommend Faith Builder Catechism. The book is appropriate for most elementary-aged children and could also be used with some middle school-aged pre-teens.

Families and Ministries Will Love Faith Bulder Catechism!

Posted by Lee Ann Mancini on 10 04 2023

This is an excellent devotional for families and ministries, and children will have fun reading biblical truths presented using gaming dialogue rich in theology. Each level is shown in the proper theological order. Level One - God's Story, Level Two - God's Kingdom, Level Three - The Gospel, Level Four - God's Grace, and Level Five - God's Church and Mission. Each level page starts with a question and memory verse, ending with a prompt to "Think About It." I highly suggest this wonderful devotional!
