Zoe’s Time to Shine helps children learn that when Jesus is near, you don’t have to hide—you can face your friends and shine a light on them.
Zoe Mouse loves to sing. She sings everywhere all the time. There is just one problem—she can’t carry a tune. One day she tries out for the school musical and tells all her friends she will definitely get the lead role. But instead of getting a part, her drama teacher asks her to help with the lighting. Zoe wants to hide! Papa finds her in the closet hiding under her blanket and helps her remember that Jesus is with her and will be her protector and helper when she goes back to school.
Edited by Edward T. Welch, Zoe’s Time to Shine offers concrete, grace-based help for overcoming shame and embarrassment and is part of the Good News for Little Hearts series, which brings gospel wisdom and biblical counsel to families. Based on CCEF’s model of hope and help, each story focuses on an animal family’s real-life issues, encouraging young readers toward a growing relationship with Jesus during challenging circumstances.
"I love all of these books, but Zoe's Time to Shine has a special place in my heart because of Zoe's misplaced confidence in her ability to sing and her deep disappointment when she finds out the truth. Children will be charmed and parents will learn so much from Ed Welch's parenting helps for children who want to hide in shame."

"These books are a uniquely different genre from classic children's bedtime reading. They are counseling books to help children. They provide a creative avenue for children to consider how their faith is intimately relevant to their struggles. This is what makes this series of books so significant.
David Powlison, (1949Ð2019) was Executive Director of CCEF and editor of the Good News for Little Hearts series
"When our children were little, we read to them constantly and had these books been available, they would have been among the favorites. With the simplicity and engaging charm of the Peter Rabbit stories, yet with the quiet grace of Christian insight, these stories stamp themselves on young minds. Text and pictures support each other tellingly. These books are destined to become favorites for young families."
D. A. Carson, Research Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical School, Deerfield, IL; cofounder of The Gospel Coalition
"I love these books. My daughter Kim who struggles with a disability loves these books. She giggles all the way through them catching all the subtle humor. I read them to my grandkids. We especially love the drawings. I buy copies for all my grandchildren. What more can I say? They are fun!"
Paul E. Miller, Director of seeJesus; author of A Praying Life and J-Curve: Dying and Rising with Jesus in Everyday Life

> Zoe the mouse is embarrassed when she isn’t picked for a part in the school’s play > her dad walks her through managing shame and how to put on the armor of God > clever illustrations > includes more notes for parents in the back Type: picture book Ages: 4-8 First let me say I absolutely love when children are taught the armor of God. Zoe’s dad had a lot of good things to say with Scriptural support. Second, I love this series as a whole. However, Zoe’s pride was not addressed at all! The first several pages show her arrogance about her singing skills as well as much bragging to others about how she’ll get the lead part. Children absolutely do need to be equipped with Scripture and the armor of God, yes. They need to be guided through tough situations like Zoe was going to have to endure, yes. But…shouldn’t we address what caused most of this problem in the first place? Overall, I only docked one star for the above, because the rest of the book’s teaching is still biblical and thoughtful. I would just like parents to note “pride” as another talking point when reading this book.

Read this to Anna last night. It was really tender and relatable. There's an adult lesson and a kid lesson and it's very endearing and empowering. I don't always like Christian kids stuff, but this was great.

Zoe's Time to Shine: When You Want to Hide explores how we can deal with situations where we just want to hide and may have feelings of shame. Approached from a Christian worldview, Welch provides a picture book with an important message that includes delightful illustrations and an engaging story. As is the tradition for the series, there are parent pages that provide further insights and scripture support for the text. While this complimentary book was provided for review by New Growth Press, no other compensation was given. All remarks are my personal and honest opinions.
Zoe’s Time to Shine: When You Want to Hide by Edward T. Welch is part of the Good News for Little Heart series by New Growth Press. Zoe’s Time to Shine: When You Want to Hide is a lovely children’s book that tells the story of Zoe, a mouse, who loves to sing all the time, along with her best friend. A play is coming up at school and Zoe wants to participate in it. Zoe brags to everyone that she is going to be the star of the play. When Zoe ends up not getting the starring role of the play and is given another responsibility, she runs home to hide. When Zoe‘s father finds out, he teaches her a powerful lesson from God‘s Word. I absolutely loved Zoe’s Time to Shine: When You Want to Hide! I loved the message in the book and how beautifully illustrated the book is. This is the first book that I am reading from the Good News for Little Heart series, but it will not be my last. I love that Zoe’s Time to Shine talks about a situation a lot of people deal with and deals with it in a Christ-like manner. I believe Mr. Welch wrote a fantastic book about bragging and learning how to deal when things don’t go your way. I love how Zoe’s response to not getting the starring role is portrayed and that it gets the point across in an effective way. I thought the story was a unique way to teach Children about God’s Armor. (I’m trying not to give away too many spoilers here!) There is also a help guide in the book that could help lead to some great discussions about the things that are brought up in the book. I highly recommend Zoe’s Time to Shine: When You Want to Hide and believe that it will teach all who read it a valuable lesson.
