Tully’s Christmas Mess tells the story of an adventurous Christmas in the Miller house, reminding them of the true reason why we celebrate.
Tully wants to be a part of all the Christmas festivities along with his human family, but they are always telling him, “No Tully. Sit down. You will make a mess.” When his leash gets tangled around the Christmas tree, the whole tree falls down, creating a big mess! Tully is afraid his family will be mad that he ruined Christmas, but instead they are reminded of the very first Christmas when Jesus came to Earth to clean up our messes.
This Christmas turn to Jesus who came into our messy world, took up our burdens, carried our sorrows, and died so we might live. Now he lives to intercede for all, right in the middle of our messy lives. It is a good and true story to share with your family on Christmas and every day throughout the year.
“If your Christmas celebrations sometimes get muddled and a little messy, then this is the perfect book for you and your children. My friends, Jill and Paul Miller weave a delightful story around the antics of their adorable but quirky dog, Tully. Highlighted by the charming illustrations of Jonty Howley, we learn an encouraging lesson about the first Christmas in Bethlehem and how things got rather messy for Joseph and Mary, too. I love this heartwarming little book, and every Christmas I will enjoy sharing it with the children in my life!”

“Every parent and grandparent should addTully’s Christmas Messto their family’s Christmas library. If you don’t already have a collection of Christmas books you bring out each year to read with your children, start with this gospel-rich gem by Jill and Paul Miller. Each Christmas, your kids will ask, “Can we read about Tully?”—and be reminded of the true meaning of Christmas.”

Based on a true story of the author’s family dog, Tully, this festive, gospel-rich picture book turns a Christmas disaster into a beautiful parallel of the very first Christmas. “The tree isn’t perfect anymore. And we aren’t perfect either. We all do things that get messed up, and that is why Jesus came. We all need Jesus to clean up the mess we’ve made.” This story is full of cuteness, charm, and that all-too-relatable feeling of making a big mess and the yucky emotions that follow. But instead of shame or punishment, Tully’s mistake is met with grace and a gospel-centered reminder of why Jesus came. Don’t miss the special family reflection in the back of the book—it helps you dig even deeper into how Jesus came into our messy world to make things new. *I received a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
As a mom to a little one, I really seek out age-appropriate stories that keep Christ at the center, and this one checked all my boxes. Highly recommend! My little one really enjoyed this one. The illustrations are great, and it is a fun story with a clear Gospel message. In this story, it is the Christmas season. Tully is warned about making a big mess until he finally does, but instead of being scolded, it provides an opportunity for the family to look to Christ and the first Christmas, and to remember that Jesus came to Earth to clean up our messes (sin). In the back of the book, there is a section from the author with takeaways from the story and some practical things parents can teach their children from the Christmas story. This is the perfect book to read as a family during the holidays, especially, and really any time of the year. I love approachable and age-appropriate stories like this that still keep Christ at the center. Recommended age for this book is 4–7 years old.
