Justin and Lindsey Holcomb tackle the tough question "Where do babies come from?" in a common sense, biblical way.
This common question all too often leaves parents perplexed about what to say and when to say it. When children ask "where do babies come from?," they ask because they are curious about where THEY came from. The question is not about sex.
The Holcombs, along with illustrator Trish Mahoney, help parents start the conversation with their children about reproduction by giving them the basic tools to guide them—including specific biblical content and age-appropriate ways of talking to children at different stages. Instead of leaving this conversation to "experts" or to the culture, they equip parents to answer questions about sex in the right way at the right time.
Drawing from the story of creation and how God made the living world to reproduce, God Made Babies helps children to understand the gift of reproduction in the light of God's goodness and care.
"A delightful and engaging book that captures the attention of young children who look out into their world and raise questions about the life surrounding them. The authors elegantly attend to the concrete world of their young reader and establish a refreshingly balanced view and foundation that relates faith with life, skillfully and clearly setting the stage for conversations about childbirth. Most importantly, the book creates a springboard for establishing positive and ongoing conversations for parents to speak with their children about sexuality."
John T. Chirban, Clinical psychologist at Harvard Medical School at The Cambridge Health Alliance; professor of psychology emeritus, Hellenic College and Holy Cross School of Theology; author of How to Talk With Your Children about Sex and Collateral Damage: Guiding and Protecting Your Child through the Minefield of Divorce
"Yet again Justin and Lindsey have created a resource that guides parents and caregivers to spark the most important conversations with their kids. As God Made Babies helps you connect with your kids and establish a foundation for many more conversations, your own eyes will be lifted to a Creator who shaped and formed you in his image and for his purposes."

"When your child's family dynamic doesn't match what they see in the families around them, the question, 'Where do babies come from?' has added layers of complexity. What's more, this curiosity often reveals a child's deeper longing to understand their own story and find where they belong. God Made Babies beautifully emphasizes that even before birth, every child has a special place in the heart of God."

This is a wonderful book for laying the groundwork for a child to begin to grasp the wonder of reproduction as a gift from God. God loves to create. He created living things with the ability to create living things like themselves. God made humans in His image, for Him, to be like Him, and to be with Him. “God made us able to make babies that would grow up and make more people. That’s what it means to ‘be fruitful and multiply.’ … Each baby is a gift from God!” The book provides a brief overview of baby development inside the womb. For our family right now, this sparked a few good and brief discussions as I read it with my two kids under 6, while at the same time mom is 35 weeks pregnant with baby boy. My girl kept pointing at the various illustrations of a baby inside a mom’s womb and saying, “That baby’s just like our baby!” A couple more important truths for children to grasp: “God made you on purpose because he wanted you in his world.” “God knew all about you and was excited for you to be born!” This book contains in the back a wise and helpful section for parents on things to consider when asked the baby question. Throughout, the book provides a wonderful age-appropriate way for parents to begin teaching their young children a biblical perspective on reproduction. Part of the “God Made Me” series from New Growth Press. Ages 4-8.

This is a great book that helps parents to “start the conversation with their children about reproduction by giving them the basic tools to guide them—including specific biblical content and age-appropriate ways of talking to children at different stages.” I couldn’t say it any better. This is a great supplement to the Bible. God’s Word has equipped us as parents to share the Truth about life & reproduction & this book has been a helpful supplement with how to phrase certain answers that will be helpful for toddlers & young children. I love the questions they ask parents at the end to help guide & reflect as you prayerfully seek the Lord’s wisdom & point your little ones to our Creator who has intelligently made us for His Glory & Purpose. Definitely recommend this book to add to your library.
As a mother and a counselor, I’ve always heard that “the talk” needs to be an ongoing conversation rather than a one time talk. I have a two year old who loves babies and all things pregnancy and mama. This book begins to set the foundation for kids to understand where babies come from at a developmental appropriate way. This book is probably targeted towards elementary school aged children, but we feel comfortable letting our toddler read it. The main topic is reproduction- how plants reproduce, animals, from eggs, pregnant, animals, then human development. The book super briefly mentions sperm and egg, but nothing beyond that. Our toddler took away that babies are made “from a little piece of mommy and a little piece of daddy” which we are happy with!
This is a great resource for parents and care givers! I love how the question is approached for real little kids to learn a simple answer to the question of where babies come from, in a way that can be built upon as they get older and need more specific information. My kids have been fascinated with babies, since we had several join our extended family this year, so this has been the perfect book for us to read together!

I love the goal of the book “God Made Babies.” While many caregivers can feel perplexed about how to answer, the “where do babies come from? question. Justin and Lindsey Holcomb wrote this book to help equip caregivers to have this conversation. This book draws from creation and looks at the reproduction system seen throughout God’s world. It highlights God’s goodness. This book has fun illustrations, biblically based truth for kids to think through, as well as a way to help caregivers. That said, this book had more words than I thought it would, so I’d say it is for older kids like 4--8 years old. It would be a little over my three-year olds head. As a parent, I know and you know this question is coming. I’d recommend caregivers have age appropriate answers ready, and I think this book will help equip parents to continue to talk to their kids.
This book is great for children in mid to upper elementary school who are ready to have the talk. As a babysitter, I did skip over some words like semen, sperm, uterus and vagina just because I am not the parent. Through pictures of people of all abilities, shapes, and colors, and integrated scripture throughout, this book provides a great, biblical description on how God designed babies to be made and that it take one male and one female to make babies. I also appreciated that it talked about human, plant and animal reproduction as well. Definitely not meant for itty bitty children, as it does use descriptive words as mentioned above. I read this book to a young man who has Down syndrome and is an uncle to teach him how God made his neices and nephews and he was very intrigued. His favorite part was the passing comment about how the belly button was made.
