One way or another, leaders emerge in the life of every church. Most pastors want to be intentional about developing and shaping those leaders themselves, but they rarely have the time and resources to do it. So leaders spring up, often without deep roots in the gospel, and they struggle to guide the church.
The biblical task of leading a church requires more than good management principles or sound theology. If the gospel truly is "the power of God for salvation" (Romans 1:16) and is constantly "bearing fruit and growing" within us (Colossians 1:6), then each elder must be strong in the gospel. It walks future leaders through the biblical concept of servant leadership and the primacy of character before looking at the specific duties of elders. Gospel Eldership helps develop men who know their own heart idolatry and how the good news of the gospel applies to it and who have a sense of "gospel fluency" so that they can swiftly, effectively, and clearly apply the gospel to others. Excellent book. Best eldership resource I've seen. Practical and pastoral. Highly recommend.
I recommend this book to any pastor talking about frustrations with their church leadership. Simple, Biblical, clear and personally ABSOLUTELY SAVAGE. If you take seriously the reflection questions then God has the opportunity to eviscerate some idols you don't even know you (or your team) are holding onto.
I use this for our Elder in Training process at my church. This is a one year mentoring program where current elders mentor and develop potential candidates for the church in the upcoming year. The conversations give great insight on the readiness of the candidates, but also provide great opportunity for mentoring and discipleship. It is also good for the current elders to refresh and reflect on their own leadership. Grateful for this book!

This work book Is gospel-rich and incredibly practical. I’ve served & loved the local church for 18 years and have had the privilege of growing with fellow elders and raising up young men to become elders. This is the best material I have used to date.
Love this book, It encouraged and challenged me and my study group. It spurred some pretty good discussions, as well as some tough but necessary conversations.
Robert Thune sets out the "how to" for those serious about applying biblical eldership in the church. This is a guide to apply the Word of God regarding elders in the local church.
Our elder team has enjoyed working through this book at a slow pace (one chapter per month). It does not require serious study, yet provides plenty of material for introspection and group discussion about the various facets of eldership.
Great product and a good resource to go along with Dr. Getz book on Elders and Leader, God's plan for the church, published by Moody Press. I have been reading the book and also comparing it's content to the field guide that CCBT has produced with Getz book. I would like to see this book in Spanish so we can use it along with the Getz book and field guide.
If you really want to go down this path, you'll want to read this book. It's too dangerous of a path to not do well. This book discusses how to do it well.
