Endorsements

"Long Story Short is the best material for family devotions I've ever seen. If you're looking for something careful, creative, and Christ-centered without being corny, confusing, or condescending, look no further. Pastors would be wise to buy this book by the boxful and get a copy into the hands of each family in their church."
Justin Taylor, Blogger at The Gospel Coalition; managing editor of the ESV Study Bible

"This is simply an outstanding book, and Christian families need it right now. I have never seen a devotional book that is so well suited to family devotions and to children, even as it is faithful in relating biblical truth. This book will help any Christian parent lead family devotions that will be memorable, faithful, and practical for Christian living. I'll admit this too, parents will find that they love the stories, illustrations, and learning suggestions along with their children. Marty Machowski has written a wonderful book."
R. Albert Mohler Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

"I love the simplicity and practicality of Long Story Short. Marty Machowski gives parents a valuable resource to make disciples in our homes by highlighting the gospel story and the Hero of Scripture. I plan to strongly encourage the use of this book throughout our entire network of churches."
Scott Thomas, Pastor of Pastoral Development at The Journey Church

"In Long Story Short, Marty Machowski provides what my wife and I needed when we were struggling to find good tools to disciple our young children. We got by, but this resource would have helped us so much. I envy the parents who will have it available to them. It is simple, interactive, and faithful to Scripture. It avoids the pitfalls of moralism that is prevalent in much of the children's Bible literature today. Marty insists that you and your children meet Jesus and see the gospel of grace in every story. I can't recommend this resource enough."
Timothy S. Lane, Former Executive Director, Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation; coauthor of How People Change and Relationships: A Mess Worth Making

Good resource for families that need assistance with devotionals

Posted by Fred Greco on 08 13 2014

This is a very good book to use in family devotions. It can be used around the dinner table, or at the end of the day. It is well organized and well thought out. Each week provides a Bible story to consider. Then during the next five days there are a series of things for the family to think about, memorize, and apply. (It appears to be set up to be done during the workweek.) The devotions themselves don't take very long Ð they are billed as "10 minute devotions." The only thing that seems a bit unusual is that all of the devotions come from Old Testament stories. There are New Testament passages referred to, but each story is from the Old Testament going from creation down through the return of the exiles. I would've liked to have seen some New Testament devotionals as well.

    Back to Basics

A lovely family devotional. Clear, applicable and instructive. It encourages discussion. Perhaps more suitable for the younger rather than older target age group but that also depends on how much Bible knowledge your family has. My young teens have grown up with family Bible reading and know their way around the Bible pretty well but still participated willingly and happily when we studied the book with their friends.

Good for up to age 10

This is good for very young ones. I have a mix of teens and young ones, so it was too young for us. The Bible readings are very brief: 2-3 verses and the questions very simplistic and sometimes silly. I was hoping for more scripture, more depth.

    EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT!

Not accustomed to doing devotions with your family? Then this is an excellent resource to start with! Already doing daily devotions? Then this is an excellent resource when you are looking for new material. Have a teen that thinks he/she knows it all?! The author provides helpful advice on how to deal with that. Don't let excuses get in your way. As parents we are responsible for training our children in God's way and that means presenting the Gospel to them. The Gospel transforms. Yes, stories are great but we, as parents, must ensure we pass on the call of repentance and the truth of the Gospel. 78 weeks of devotions in this book! WOW! 5 days per week. Great linked index for each week. Each day is broken into segments: Picture it/ Remember it * Scripture reading * Talk about it * Pray about it Day 3 has a segment called 'Connect it to Jesus'. LOVE the way each week is devoted to one theme. This is a great way for kids (and adults) to retain what they are learning. EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT!

Excellent Presentation of the Old Testament

Posted by Earl Staley on 02 03 2014

The book is presented for children, but all Christians can benefit from reading this book. I am 70 years old and have been a Christian for 43 years and I learned a lot about the prophecy of the coming of Jesus. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the foretelling of the coming of Jesus.
