What does it take for lasting change to take root in your life? If you've ever tried, failed, and wondered what you could do differently, you need to read How People Change.

In the book, biblical counseling experts Timothy S. Lane and Paul David Tripp explain the biblical pattern for change in a clear, practical way you can apply to the challenges of daily life.

But change involves much more than just a biblical formula: you will see how God is at work to make you the person you were created to be. That powerful, loving, redemptive relationship is at the heart of all positive change you experience.

A changed heart is the bright promise of the gospel, but many of us wonder if we'll ever see lasting change take root in our lives. When the Bible talks about the gift of a new heart, it doesn't mean a heart that is immediately perfected, but a heart that is capable of being changed. Jesus's work on the cross targets our hearts, our core desires and motivations, and when our hearts change, our behavior changes.

How People Change targets the root of a person: the heart. When our core desires and motivations change, only then will behavior follow. Using a biblical model of Heat, Thorns, Cross, and Fruit, Paul David Tripp and Timothy S. Lane reveal how lasting change is possible.

You don't need to be stuck anymore. In Christ, you are a new creation. The old has gone and the new has come. Includes a foreword by David Powlison.

Timothy S. Lane, MDiv, DMin, is a minister in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) with over 30 years of experience in pastoral ministry, counseling, teaching, and executive leadership. He is the author of several minibooks and the coauthor of the books How People Change and Relationships: A Mess Worth Making and the curricula Change and Your Relationships, and Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands. Tim speaks internationally, consults with churches, and writes about the importance of pastoral care.

Paul David Tripp, MDiv, DMin, is the president of Paul Tripp Ministries, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to connect the transforming power of Jesus Christ to everyday life. Paul is a best-selling author of many books on Christian living, including New Morning Mercies, New Morning Mercies for Teens, 12 Truths Every Teen Can Trust, How People Change, Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands, A Quest for More, Relationships: A Mess Worth Making, Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family, and the minibook A Teen’s Guide to Peer Pressure. Paul and his wife, Luella, live in Philadelphia and have four grown children.

The Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation (CCEF) has been teaching people how to understand the wisdom and depth of the Bible and apply its grace-centered message to the problems of daily living since 1968. A biblical counseling and educational ministry located in suburban Philadelphia, CCEF operates a robust biblical counseling ministry in their home office as well as on-site training for others with a heart for discipleship. CCEF also teaches several accredited counseling programs both on-site and through distance learning in conjunction with Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. As an extension of the local church, CCEF accomplishes its mission through a unique synergy of counseling, training, publications, and conferences.

"This book is applied theology. It's about heat, thorns, the cross, and fruit. It's about present grace. In sixteen short and well-illustrated chapters, the wonderful prospect of change for the good is held out for the reader. We are called to consider our circumstances and our responses to them, and beneath that to examine our hearts' desires and to turn afresh to Christ's cross."

Mark Dever, Pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, DC

"It's encouraging to know that, in God's hands, the winds of adversity that batter our lives are also agents of fruitful change in us. Paul Tripp and Tim Lane have done us all a favor by leading us down that path of change and teaching us how to embrace God's transforming work in our hearts."

Carolyn Custis James, Author of When Life and Beliefs Collide

"Change doesn't happen overnight for the Christian. It's a lifelong journey. Paul Tripp and Tim Lane masterfully guide us along the biblical path that points us to the cross and a lifestyle of faith and repentance. I recommend this book to all Christians who desire to grow in their relationship with God."

Tremper Longman III, Robert H. Gundry Professor of Biblical Studies, Westmont College

"Governments and agencies can legislate for people, resource people, teach people, but they can't change people. Jesus Christ can! It's that people-changing gospel that these study guides apply clearly, deeply, and perceptively to the relationships that Christians have with friends, neighbors, and families. London City Mission uses this material for training our entire team of 120 who are engaged in patient, sensitive, personal evangelism. These guides are an excellent—even an essential—preparation for that great work."

John Nicholls, Former Chief Executive, London City Mission, UK

"There are very few resources I find more useful than CCEF's study guides. God changes people by conforming their hearts into his likeness, and How People Change will help your laypeople to understand this more clearly. If you want to know why people do the things they do, this resource is for you!"

Deepak Reju, Associate Pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist, Washington, DC

"How People Change is a distinctively biblical look at the heart's struggle with sin, its consequences, and God's prescription for it. It has given me fresh insight into my own struggles and better equipped me to help those in my congregation with theirs. I enthusiastically recommend it."

Amazing Book

This lecture was really helpful to develop a strong way to see the change, which is necessary to grow up in our Christian life.

Absolutely Practical

This book is abundantly practical.
If you ever wondered how God changes people, this book is for you.
The change this book talks about is not a mere external or behavioral change.
Rather, it talks about the heart change that brings forth external changes in a Christian's life.
The center of the whole transformation is the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I did believe in the gospel for the past 8 years but this book solidified the fact that the gospel has a transforming power whatever the sin issues we are struggling with knowingly or even unknowingly.

One of the many beneficial chapter for me was "Change is Community Project."
It is so easy in the Western world to carry individualistic mindset into the church.
However, when we think we can do things alone and grow alone, we are greatly mistaken.
The redemptive friends who are close enough to share life and speak the truth in love are essential for our growth.

If you want to live a fruitful Christian life yet have no clear vision of where you are going and how you can do it, this is the book for you.

Great book

Read this book for a Biblical counseling class and it has had a great impact on my spiritual life. It goes into depth about what the believer's identity in Christ is. This is a great read for any Christian who is serious about spiritual growth - whether they are studying counseling or not. It digs deep into why we sin in response to the "heat" in our lives and how our identity in Christ ("fruit tree" instead of "thornbush") can help us learn to live in victory over sin.

Essential Building Blocks for Christian Growth

How many sermons have you listened to? How many hours have you spent in church with others who have no idea how to walk alongside you, disciple you or grow in life giving ways that Christ died to give?
This book will help open your eyes to the power of recognizing the motivations of our hearts and the Savior who invites us to be transformed by understanding who we are and who we can become.

Great book I highly recommend it.

The Holy Spirit has used this in my own life in a great way. If you are thinking of helping others first look at the speck in your own eye, as you read this book try to apply it to yourself first and how knows you might just change too. Great Book I highly recommend it, but on account of what I needed to change in my own life I didn't really enjoy reading it. The book is well written and thought provoking.

A Practical, Biblical Exploration of Personal and Congregational Change

This is a phenomenal book! I read it through with a young deacon in our church, chapter by chapter, meeting weekly. There are hundreds of practical, down to earth questions in this book that make you work to comprehend and apply. He is so biblical that there are large chunks of scripture throughout the book, and plenty of real life stories of ministry and counseling to give you an idea that this is not just theory. Read it slowly, with others and plan to come back to it often!

Helpful but could be a little shorter

Disclaimer: I’ve read the Study Guide version and completed the Biblical Counseling training by City-to-City which went through the model prior to reading this book.

Personally I think this could be a very helpful introduction to people who are new to the model of biblical change. The book is full of explanations and examples which make the model practical.

However, I found the book a little too repetitive, and I felt like it could be a lot shorter than it is now. Any how, this book provides a very practical model that could benefit your ministry and help you in your personal growth. If you’re looking for something to go through with your small group, I actually recommend going straight forward to the Study Guide which sufficiently provides all the descriptions and examples needed.

Is Christ at the center?

We Christians are so often distracted by otherwise good ministries, unaddressed sins, and interesting/entertaining/important ideas that ultimately usurp Jesus' role as the one who saves us. This book pairs real-life vignettes, visual diagrams, and bibical analysis to speak frankly about these distractions, and show us how and why Jesus is the only way to personal and communal spiritual health

Lane explains "change" well.

Lane explains "change" well. However, it is a personal choice each of us get to make. No one can "force" another to change ... even if it is the best for them

Eye-opening content!

This book's content is eye-opening and the authors do a wonderful job of communicating some very deep content. I highly recommend reading this book regardless of where you are in your walk with our Lord.

This book digs deeper than simply actions and responses.

This book digs deeper than simply actions and responses. I digs down to the heart. The heart of people, and also the heart of the gospel. It unpacks the present grace of Christ that draws us to himself. Many practical, encouraging, and convicting questions are give in the book that takes the gospel and puts it into everyday life.

Good, but not always practical

It’s a solid book, the ideas are pretty good and it’s helpful if you’re not really struggling in life. But if you do have struggles, and the superficial shallow Christian answers just aren’t cutting it, this book probably isn’t for you. It just falls flat when it comes to how to put into practice, and how to live a real Christian life that goes beyond a personal study.

Should have read years ago!

I can only say that if you have not been in the heat of life you may not connect with the wisdom herein. I have borne the scorch of life's heat and felt the pain of its thorns without the benefit of what the authors present. If you're like me then you need this insight and its wisdom. I have been pastor to three churches in the furnace of messed up people. This book is very helpful.

Great Book!

Fantastic book for helping me first understand my own heart and what causes struggles in my own life and then for having a very very helpful framework for being able to understand the roots of other people’s issues and to effectively counsel others. Highly recommended!

Highly recommend to every Christian out there!

This book makes you look at the heart and go deeper than just surface behavioral change. If you do not get to the heart your attempt at behavior change will eventually fail.

A must-read for church leaders and Christians

We’ve churchified ways to grow as a person outside of the gospel and it doesn’t work. This book along with others like like it, “Recovering Redemption” and “you can change,” are examples of correcting this tremendous misstep.

Insightful and powerful

This book is insightful & powerful. Finally, a book that gets to the HEART of the matter and produces lasting change. I am using it in a jail ministry with female addicts.

Excellent book on how to really change yourself!

This book can change the way you approach struggles and difficulties in your life by giving you a right perspective of your situations, no matter how awful or trying they are. I highly recommend it for the truth that it contains about being honest with yourself. It helps you do self counsel, and gives you a method of dealing with your problems without always running to someone else.

Outstanding

My favorite part was the example of the church who accidentally replaced gospel centrality with fine tuning theological understanding. It is an easy slope to slide down, but if we don't keep Jesus and the gospel at the heart of it all we will forget what we are thankful for, how much God loves us, and why we are here.

Truly wonderful book!

Truly wonderful book, gives you guidance on how to make Christ-centered change without hitting you with "the power of Christ compels you." style writing. This book saved my life, in more ways than one. Every time I read it, I find new lessons in it that I didn't see before. I have highlighted the whole book twice over, because everything hits you hard at one point or another.

Good overview of CCEF

I think this book gives a good overview of how CCEF does ministry, but I do not find Lane and Tripp to be exceptional writers though they are very clear and I know many people appreciate that.

Deepen your walk with God.

This brings a refreshing look at the walk of a believer. It uses well applied principles related to real life struggles. Many of the trials mentioned applied to my circumstances but reminded me my value is found in who I am "in Christ." Whether you to are building your walk with the Lord or need to rejuvenate your faith this book is a winner!
