Description

This biblically-based guide is designed to help girls ages 8–12 navigate the physical, emotional, and spiritual changes of growing up.

Becoming You for Girls is a Christ_centered guidebook designed to help preteen girls understand, navigate, and grow through puberty—physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. Written in an accessible, warm, and encouraging tone, the book explains biological changes, emotional development, friendships, identity, safety, wisdom, technology, and faith, all while grounding each topic in biblical truth.

Counselor Darby A. Strickland offers a trustworthy, gospel-shaped vision of growing up that goes beyond body changes to help children grow in wisdom, love, and godliness. Awkward or sensitive topics are handled with gentleness, dignity, and appropriate humor, helping girls feel safe, curious, and confident rather than embarrassed or afraid.

  • Encourages girls to embrace their identity in Christ, so they can learn not just what is happening but why God made them this way.
  • Can be read independently or with parents and is a valuable tool to foster communication about important topics like personal safety and body image.
  • Includes an appendix for parents with conversation starters for talking to your daughter about her changing body and emotions and tips for when questions become uncomfortable.

Endorsements

“I’m not sure I can give a higher endorsement to this book than this: My pre-teen kids actually wanted to read it! With the care of a trusted mentor, Darby Strickland guides kids—and their parents—through the challenges of puberty with gospel wisdom, practical insight, and the kindness of Jesus.”
Laurie Krieg, Director of Parent Programs and Discipleship, The Center for Faith, Sexuality & Gender

“Winsomely written, with eye-catching graphics and illustrations, the Becoming You series on puberty and growing up by Darby Strickland is an informative, conversation-sparking resource that, I hope, gains broad use by families in the church. Throughout each book, Darby highlights that puberty is a time for growth and maturation, not only bodily, but also spiritually. Parents and children nearing puberty will find it warm, down-to-earth, refreshingly honest, highly practical, and eminently Christ-centered.”
Michael R. Emlet, Faculty and Counselor, Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation (CCEF); author of Saints, Sufferers, and Sinners: Loving Others As God Loves Us

“In a culture where conversations about puberty are often marked by confusion, embarrassment, or competing messages, this resource offers something far better—biblical wisdom, practical guidance, and genuine hope. With remarkable warmth and clarity, it equips parents to walk alongside their sons and daughters through one of life’s most significant seasons of change, and helps them see their developing bodies, not as something to fear or be ashamed of, but as a beautiful part of God’s good design.”
Julie Lowe, Director of NextGen Counseling

“Like many parents, I don’t always feel confident navigating conversations with my daughter about her changing body. What should I say? How much detail is helpful? Darby Strickland comes alongside both parents and maturing children with wisdom, warmth, and clarity. She speaks directly to girls in an age-appropriate way, which helps them understand the changes they are experiencing. She grounds every conversation in the truth that the God who made them, knows them, and loves them designed their bodies for these developments because becoming a woman is a deep, wondrous good. Parents, read this book alongside your children, and let Darby be a trusted guide as you begin these important conversations together.”
Lauren Whitman, Faculty & counselor at the Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation; author of When Parents Feel Like Failures: How Jesus Quiets Our Distress

    Advance Reader Copy

Posted by Ana Diaz on 08 28 2026

A thoughtful and practical introduction to puberty for girls and their parents. I appreciated that it covers both the physical changes and the emotional side of growing up, while pointing girls back to God’s good design for their bodies. It’s easy to read and gives parents a natural way to begin conversations about topics that can sometimes feel difficult to talk about. A great resource to have on hand as your daughter enters this new stage.

    The ongoing script I needed

    Posted by Lindsey on 08 20 2026

I had the chance to preview Becoming You For Girls before its release, and… wow! I kept thinking, "This is the exact script of gentleness, encouragement, and love I need when my weary mom brain gets overwhelmed by my daughter's changing body, mind, and emotions." It is beautifully written, leaving so much space for girls across the spectrum to see themselves in it. I would also add, as a millennial mom who grew up in purity culture and had to do some healing work, that this isn't that. There is no shame, fear-mongering, or heavy-handed rules here. Instead, it gives the reader a voice, confidence, and even a joyful expectation for this season of change. I will definitely be grabbing a hard copy and reading it multiple times over with my girls.
