In this faith-bolstering book, best-selling author Edward T. Welch investigates the roots of fear in the human heart and the ramifications of living in the grips of anxiety, worry, and dread.

Running Scared explores how fear inescapably takes root in all of our lives and how our race for the good life finds us all too often "running scared." Welch encourages readers to discover for themselves how the Bible is full of beautiful words of comfort and peace for fearful people.

Everyone is afraid of something, and Welch guides readers to see how Jesus enters in to fear. Within thirty topical meditations, Welch offers sound biblical theology, gospel answers, and moment-by-moment, thoughtful encouragement for those in a heart and mind battlefield of rampant, panic-stricken fear.

This comprehensive primer on the topic of fear, worry, and the rest of God will have readers retreating to Scripture for invariable constancy, stalwart care, and robust comfort rather than human independence, control, and self-protectiveness.

Running Scared affirms that, through Scripture, God speaks directly to our fears, including:

  • Money and possessions
  • People and their judgments
  • Death, pain, suffering, and punishment

Welch's lively text provides convincing evidences that humanity's struggle against active and dormant fears are countless. He presents the good news that God provides both the remedy and the cure for this malady in the person of Jesus Christ, the work of the Holy Spirit, and through powerful, life-altering promises in Scripture.

Far more than merely another psychology "self-help" guide, Running Scared serves as a biblical road map to a life of serenity and security.

"Fear is the most underrated emotion of all our troubles. Ed has written a great book that is of great help to those of us who have to struggle with the paralyzing feelings of fear and anxiety."

Stephen Arterburn, Founder, New Life Ministries and Women of Faith; author, Reframe Your Life

"Fear can make cowards of us all. It can also cripple the mighty, stripping us of confidence and strength to ever face the challenges of ordinary life a terrible way to live. In his characteristic voice which is both authoritative and sensitive, Welch inspires us to turn to God as our champion in our battle with fear."

Tim Clinton, EdD, President, American Association of Christian Counselors

"Worries are false prophets that insight alone was worth the price of the book, but far, far more awaits the wise reader who exploits this brilliant book by Ed Welch. Ed tells our story of fear and worry with compelling honesty and depth. But even more, he invites us to see how our loyal God refuses to abandon us in our fear; instead, he allows our fear to reveal our fragility and desperate need for his presence. I was not only informed and moved by this book; I was invited to worship. This is not merely a book about fear; it is an invitation to a transformed view of God."

Dan B. Allender, PhD, Professor of Counseling, The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology; author, To Be Told, The Healing Path, The Wounded Heart, and Leading with a Limp

"To live is to fret, and Ed Welch understands why. With an impressive grasp of what makes people tick, Ed exposes what lies beneath our fears and escorts us to the One who supplies hope for worriers. Ed's writing is clear, honest, pastoral, and most importantly, soaked with Scripture. Read this book, and be not afraid."

Dave Harvey, Sovereign Grace Ministries; author, When Sinners Say "I Do"

"Capturing the depth and complexity of fear, Welch provides immeasurable insight into an emotion that is experienced by all, but for some enslaves. Skillfully illustrating the eternal sufficiency of Jesus Christ and the majesty of his glorious Kingdom, Running Scared forces fear beneath the shadow of the Almighty where it dissipates under the loving care of a heavenly Father. A remarkable read!"

Great Read

Much to digest. Should've finished in a month by reading a chapter a day, but must be honest in that sometimes I did not want to read about or confront my fear, so it took me quite a bit longer to read it through. I also read on my Kindle at night when my fears and worries were most present. I'd love to own a hard copy so that I can mark up and highlight. Continuing to work on releasing that fear and anxiety, but I think reading books like these helps significantly

I Highky Recommend This Book!

I highly recommend this book! We are fearful people, whether we realize it or not. Edward Welch does an excellent job of bringing the hope of Christ to all of us who struggle with fear. I listened to it as an audiobook and enjoyed it, although I think I would have gotten a lot more out of it if I would have read a hard copy.

A couple of my favorite quotes from this book:

“He doesn’t hear because of us and the quality of our prayers. He hears because He is the God who hears.”

“How do you seek the kingdom? When you seek the King, you are seeking His kingdom.”

“Since God’s laws are a systematic expression of His character, we become more like the King when we keep His laws.”

“You have probably heard definitions of holy such as consecrated, set apart, and pure. But it is difficult to find a synonym that does it justice. That is because holy is not so much an attribute of God, as it is a way to talk about His essential nature. In other words, no matter what God reveals about Himself, He is revealing His holiness. His love is holy, His kindness is holy, His sternness is holy. The reason the fear of the Lord is such a robust response to God is because it is a response to His holiness, and His holiness pervades every one of His attributes.”

“Outcasts and those with a glaring sense of their own spiritual neediness can only put their trust in someone other than themselves. This is what God requires, that we trust in Him alone.”

Great Book

This book was more helpful than I anticipated and I’m so thankful I remembered it was on our bookshelf. Pretty jammed full of content, but basically it’s digging into the roots of different kinds of fears and addressing them with the character of God. That’s how we battle and see victory. Praise the Lord!

Helpful Insight and Recommendations for True Shalom

So far everything I've read by this author has been very Christ-centered and focused on how the word of God changes our lives. This book isn't by any means the answer to anxiety and fear, but I would recommend it to someone wanting to read about fear and anxiety. Or, I would use snippets of this book to work through with someone who isn't much of a reader themselves.

Fear and Control

Oh boy do I struggle with Fear and letting it control me, then I try to control things because I am fearful. A vicious cycle that I hate being in. I’ve been able to change quite a bit by reading this book, and looking at fear and the effects of fear as sin, then confessing it to God and others, then repenting. Some great stuff.

Practical words for getting off the fear and worry merry go round

This book was set up so well for meditating on the ideas and scripture. The concepts laid out were so clear and practical. Taking at least a day to read and meditate on each chapter was a really great way to get the most out of this book about living in the Kingdom here and now. I loved this book.

Help in times of change

I have found this book very helpful in perceiving God's will for my life over the past few months as I have gone through a change of employment. The author brings together many passages of scripture that shows that The Lord guides us and comforts up as we go through the stresses of life. This book would be a help to any Christian as we all need the reassurance of God's love for us and willingness to guide us if we only look to him and follow his leading. This book helps put together the Bible passages that give us this assurance. I highly recommend this book.

Highly recommended

More than anything else which robs Christians of the power of the good news today is that vague low level worry - worry about work and wealth and health. In this book Edward Welch opens the Bible and speaks powerfully again and again to those who are held captive by those worries, and points to the promises of the God who provides, the God who has promised to be with us in whatever we face. For me it was a word I needed to hear, a word which challenged me, a word which encouraged me, a word which drove me to meditate on Gods word again and to live Gods promises, to step out again in faith in the God who holds us in his hands, to shake me out of my comforts and the worries of losing those comforts, and serve and trust in the God who deserves everything I've got.

Welch opened my eyes to see the God of rest in a whole new light.

Easy to read based on scriptural truths which prompt thoughtful inquiry into what's keeping you from being all God created you to be in Him. After reading and working through the book, I can honestly report that I have gone from being a 'stress factory of worry and fear' to a person who is calm and at peace all day and even through the night. I am so grateful for his honesty and direct approach which helped me see that my worry existed because I was focused on something other than God. If you struggle with anxiety, worry or fear of any kind, pick up your bible and this book and get ready to find a new way of living.

Gets to heart issues behind worry

This is a great book that I would highly recommend. It helped me to recognize patterns of fear and worry in my own life and the heart issues behind them. Ed Welch does a great job of pointing anxious people to the God of rest. Convicting and yet uplifting in tone.

Fearful people

As someone going through a rough season of life, I picked up this book on a whim. Welch tackles fear at its roots, and helps the reader to identify and grapple with this pervasive issue. What encouragement, what exhortation! Welch brings everything back to God's Word, and hope is laced through every chapter. Honestly, I couldn't recommend this book more, it was a Godsend to me!

I struggle with fear and anxiety and the author knows how to speak peace to your anxiety and has been there. He is a Christian and uses scripture and his occupation to show your mind how to think when you face difficult feelings and fears.

Solid truths from the heart!

Welch expertly ties together the commands of God (Fear not) with the promises of God (I am with you) in a way that makes the old, old story of God’s providence a timely challenge of our current fears. While he acknowledges that nothing he says is new or ground-breaking, he compassionately presses into the anxious heart and plants a seed, hope in the future joy, triumph, and shalom of the kingdom of heaven.

Helpful look at what our fears and anxiety mean

I haven't finished reading all this book, but what I have read so far is pretty good. The author does not treat fear and anxiety with trivial phrases but go into more depth about what is really going on and how our fears really show us where our treasure is. I am learning from this.
