"Long Story Short is the best material for family devotions I've ever seen. If you're looking for something careful, creative, and Christ-centered without being corny, confusing, or condescending, look no further. Pastors would be wise to buy this book by the boxful and get a copy into the hands of each family in their church."

Justin Taylor, Blogger at The Gospel Coalition; managing editor of the ESV Study Bible

"This is simply an outstanding book, and Christian families need it right now. I have never seen a devotional book that is so well suited to family devotions and to children, even as it is faithful in relating biblical truth. This book will help any Christian parent lead family devotions that will be memorable, faithful, and practical for Christian living. I'll admit this too, parents will find that they love the stories, illustrations, and learning suggestions along with their children. Marty Machowski has written a wonderful book."

R. Albert Mohler Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

"I love the simplicity and practicality of Long Story Short. Marty Machowski gives parents a valuable resource to make disciples in our homes by highlighting the gospel story and the Hero of Scripture. I plan to strongly encourage the use of this book throughout our entire network of churches."

Scott Thomas, Pastor of Pastoral Development at The Journey Church

"In Long Story Short, Marty Machowski provides what my wife and I needed when we were struggling to find good tools to disciple our young children. We got by, but this resource would have helped us so much. I envy the parents who will have it available to them. It is simple, interactive, and faithful to Scripture. It avoids the pitfalls of moralism that is prevalent in much of the children's Bible literature today. Marty insists that you and your children meet Jesus and see the gospel of grace in every story. I can't recommend this resource enough."

Children’s Ministry

This was an excellent addition to the curriculum for not only the younger children, but also for older kids I just wish they had the same thing for the New Testament

Good Old Testament Bible Study Tool

This is a good tool for Bible Study with elementary age crowd, especially ones that know many of the stories. Bible readings are reasonable and questions are related to and require some thought for answering. I have enjoyed using this. See Old Story New for the companion New Testament study

My 7 yr old loves this book!

After buying the kindle version, I ended up buying the book as well. This is an awesome devotional that takes kids and parents through the Bible and asks questions for review and reflection. I was impressed with this book tying the stories to Jesus and including the Psalms. Each week is split up into 5 daily chapters. We are able to go at our own pace. My son (7 yrs old) brings this to me before bed and enjoys it as well.

Looking for a Family Devotional, stop looking

Going through this devotional has been such a blessing to my family. We have all learned something. The devotional is chronological, theologically sound, and continually points to Jesus tying the Old and New Testaments together in one book. Devotions can be completed in 10-15 minutes with minimal prep but are made rich with thoughtful questions and a final prayer.

Awesome! Kids 7, 5 & 3 Love it

This is perfect! It doesn't take a long time to go through each night. The kids (7,5 & 3) all enjoy it. I like how it has you read a passage out of the bible to get them involved. Highly recommend.

WONDERFUL devotional book

WONDERFUL devotional book! We used for our morning devotions before school with our 12 & 13 year old. Good, thought provoking questions which sparked our interest in the kings! We just spent all summer studying the Kings as a result of this book. THANK YOU!!

4 stars because it looks like a great resource

4 stars because it looks like a great resource. Casually scripted so that parents not too familiar with the Bible should feel comfortable reading through this and teaching their kids. It has a variety of teaching techniques within each week. It's not exactly what I was looking for (thus, only the 4 stars), but it is an excellent family devotion book.

Thanks Marty Machowski!!!

My two oldest and I are 95% of the way through this book. The amount of time required on a daily basis is just right for us. Once we complete Long Story Short, we'll be moving to Old Story New.

4.5 Stars

I would have given this 4 _ stars if I could, but I just can't give it a full 5. My complaint is that the author continuously referred to the lessons and Bible readings as "stories." I understand the common us of the term, but caution using it when dealing with biblical history if you truly believe that it is the inerrant word of God. I highly recommend this for any Christian family.

Great Jesus-centered devotional for the family

Great Jesus-centered devotional for the family. Not just moralistic teaching or Bible stories detached from the gospel. Short and sweet lessons.

Great Jesus-centered devotional for the family.

My family and I are through the first week of this devotional and I love it. I love how it guides me as the parent to ask thought provoking questions centered around the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I would highly recommend it.

Great for ten year old!

My daughter is 10 yrs old and this is a great devotional for us while we wait in the car at her bus stop each morning. I let her read the scripture, I'll ask a few questions, and we pray together before she gets on the bus.

Draws you and your children closer to God!

This is beautifully crafted to draw you and your children closer to God through the readings of the Bible. Through simple lessons that the author connects to daily life today, we find the teachings of Jesus in everyday life as well as predicted throughout the Old Testament. I have learned a great deal from this study with my family and look forward to using the New Testament version when we complete this book.

Great little devotional!

We are just finishing week 4 of this devotional and just love it! I have a 4, 3, & almost 1 year old. Some things are a little over the older ones heads, but I'm able to explain in a way that they can understand. My 3 year old has a difficult time sitting still to begin with, but my 4 year old is really retaining what he has learned from day to day. And, he's asking lots of questions. I really like how there is a basic lesson that you work through for the week, and it shows how events in the old testament point straight to Jesus. Each lesson takes about 10 minutes, so we're able to do it at breakfast, and is short enough that they don't lose focus. I would highly recommend this for all ages, as it's clarified a few things for me.

Brings the Old Testament to life for kids and adults

You can easily modify the lessons to meet the ages of your children. I do this study with my 2 1/2 year old and am able to use the tools they give to make it interesting for her. It will also be great as she gets older and I truly feel that it has no age limit. It is Gospel centered and very well put together. I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a bible stidy that is not too complicated but still full of truth and meat.

Great book for family devotionals

Really liked how the chapters are short enough to keep attention of the young ones but detailed enough to be a challenging reflection on Gods Word

Covers a lot of Scripture with good theology and examples.

My sons and I have been working our way through this Old Testament family worship book for a couple of years. It covers so much of scripture with good theology and examples that children understand. I have already purchased its sequel (Old Story New) to begin when we finish in a few weeks.

It wasn't for use

We read The Gospel Story Bible by Marty Machowski for our family devotions and my husband and I really liked it. We ordered this expecting the same quality but were disappointed. The content seemed too rudimentary for our 10, 8, and 6 year olds but the language too advanced for a younger child. The content was by no means heretical. We were just hoping for something a little deeper.

Awesome kids devotional

We love this devotional. It is very short and can easily be lengthened or shortened depending on your time schedule. It isn't cheesy like so many children's devotionals are. It is biblically sound and really helps kids take biblical principles and apply them to their lives.

A wonderful children's devotional

This devotional is written to present a biblical gospel from cover to cover. It is intended to aid you in passing this treasure on to your children . . . passing on the truth of GodÕs Word is our unique responsibility as parents._ (Page 1)_The goal of this devotional is to . . . pass on a clear gospel message showing our children how every story in the Bible points forward or back to the gospel of Jesus Christ and GodÕs story of salvation. (Page 2) The target audience is parents of younger aged children (i.e., parents who have children ranging from toddler age to young teenager years). The content is directed toward the children. Marty Machowski does a broad overview the entire Old Testament in his work. He also ties in the central theme throughout the entire Bible that it speaks of GodÕs redemptive plan and points to Jesus as the ScripturesÕ fulfillment (John 5:39). Long Story Short is biblically well

Great Devotional

We're about 3 weeks into it and I like it. I like that it's short, which keeps my kids focused and makes it doable most days. Love getting them reading scripture at an early age.

Short enough to make the children think a long time

Great, daily devotional. Makes kids think and are short & to the point.
