Charles H. Spurgeon (1834–1892) was the pastor of the Metropolitan Tabernacle, London, for thirty-eight years, and his ministry exploded, resulting in the largest evangelical congregation of his day and the founding of 66 parachurch ministries, including a college and orphanage. He is widely regarded as one of the nineteenth century's best preachers, and his sermons have been translated into over forty languages.

Geoffrey Chang, MDiv, PhD, serves as Associate Professor of Historical Theology and the curator of the Spurgeon Library at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is an elder at Wornall Road Baptist Church, the Book Review Editor for History and Historical Theology at Themelios (The Gospel Coalition), and is the author of many articles and books, as well as the editor of A Wondrous Mystery, Your Only Comfort, and What Depth of Love. He is married to Stephanie, and they have three children.

In Breath of the Soul, Geoffrey Change presents thirty devotions for powerful prayer by C. H. Spurgeon.

Study

The devotions are arranged and divided into four sections: (1) theology of prayer, (2) practical instructions, confession, supplication, and thanksgiving, (3) corporate prayer, and (4) perseverance in prayer. This helps with the structure and makes for a full and cohesive reading.

I was most challenged to see how prayer is how God gives understanding and interpretation. Looking at Jeremiah 33:3, Spurgeon shows how, especially for teachers, “prayer is your best means of study.”

Power

I was most moved to read of the power that remains available to us in prayer. Spurgeon says, “It seems, my dear friends, an awful thing to have such a power in one’s hands as to be able to pray!”

I was most inspired to see how Spurgeon urged his church to be a people of prayer, acting as an engine for his preaching ministry and for the church’s ministries, and how he taught them how to pray through his sermons. Reading this book will not only teach you about prayer, but it will teach you how to pray.

Breath of the Soul has 30 devotions on prayer taken from the sermons of Charles H. Spurgeon.

I loved this quote from the back cover - “Prayer was not only the breath of the soul, but also the breath of the church.”

This is the 4th in the Old Made New Series edited by Geoffrey Chang and it has made me want to now add the first 3 to our home library. A really beautiful devotional.

I introduced my girls to Spurgeon recently and we enjoyed going through this devotional on prayer together as a family. We have had a goal to be more intentional with prayer and these daily devotions have encouraged us in many ways! While Spurgeon can be hard for my younger girls to follow along with sometimes, they overall enjoyed the lessons it taught us.

A particular favorite quote of mine (although there are many) was from Day 11 - Argument in Prayer…”He requires for us to plead with Him, and to bring forth our strong reasons, as Isaiah said (Isaiah 41:21), because this will show that we feel the value of the mercy.”

Spurgeon would be the first to tell you to “visit many good books, but live in the Bible” and I am sure this one would be considered among one of those good books.
